Cummins ISX Diesel Injector Installation Instructions

Throughout the lifespan of your diesel engine, it's likely that you'll need to remove or replace your fuel injectors. However, are you aware of the proper procedure? You will be guided step-by-step through the installation of diesel fuel injectors in your ISX engine.

YOUR INJECTORS' SETUP

Before we began the installation, the injector was taken out of the cylinder head. Whether it was a head gasket replacement or an in-frame overhaul, by this point you would have finished your repair. If you are rebuilding the engine in your ISX, we have some suggestions for you.

If you intend to reuse your injectors, you should replace the o-rings. These o-rings are part of both the overhaul package and the top gasket set. These o-rings come in different sizes, thus in order to get a good fit, you must use the right o-ring in the right groove. The use of an o-ring hook can greatly simplify this.

You might want to use a shop towel to wipe out any remaining soot or dirt after cleaning the injector bore with a brush. The shop towel will pick up everything, further cleaning the bore.

It's not a good idea to blow into the injector hole bore because you run the danger of unintentionally introducing debris into the combustion chamber.

Then, to make sure that the bolt hole where the injector hold down goes is clear of oil or debris, get your injector and lubricate the o-rings with engine oil before fitting the injector hold down. This prevents torque from being generated before the connection is stable.

Carefully position the injector in the injector bore.

Set the hold over the injector and then turn the cap screw. These particular injectors are torqued to 59 foot-pounds, according to Quick Serve online or a shop handbook for the ISX engine. Make sure to choose the right antique engine. As we have mentioned, this installation was successfully completed on an 871. In actuality, the injector hold down lowers the injector into the bore.

When the injector is in the cylinder head and is appropriately torqued, install the rocker shaft components and modify the valve injector settings.
