Use of Cummins ISX Engine Timing Wedges

General Instructions for Using the Timing Wedges on Cummins ISX Engines

Before timing the Cummins ISX, as usual, refer to your owner's manual for the most accurate and complete instructions.

Prior to getting started, it's important to remember that the timing pin must be installed before the gears are removed. Until all of the gears are tightened, you must also make sure the pin stays in position. Not doing so could result in improper timing and eventual engine failure.

Step 1:

The crankshaft should be rotated clockwise. Check the engine vibration damper's outside diameter for the "insert pin" symbol; it must coincide with the marking on the gear housing.

Step 2:

Put the crankshaft locking pin (3163020) into the boss hole after removing the stopper from the timing pin boss. In this instance, the green band on the timing pin and the block's timing pin boss surface match up.

If the green band is partially or fully invisible outside the block, you placed the pin in the crank notch incorrectly. The pin needs to be correctly positioned in order to lock the crankshaft in place.

Step 3:

Remove the following:

EGR Crossover Tube

Rocker Switch Cover

Gasket for a rocker switch

(Caution: Before pressing the wedge into place to prevent engine damage, check the timing code on the engine data plate.)

Step 4:

Give the timing wedge's top a light tap with a mallet after inserting the correct timing wedge to lock the valve camshaft. If done correctly, it will be adequately seated.

Step 5:

Remove the following:

Camshaft Position Sensor

Upper Gear Cover

Crankshaft Position Sensor

Lower Gear Cover (if required)
