Volvo Trucks adds D13 engine with turbo compounding

The D13 engine from Volvo Trucks now has turbo compounding
Volvo Trucks North America is introducing a turbo compounding option for the Volvo D13 engine. The 13-liter D13 with turbo compounding boosts output by up to 100 lb.-ft.of torque and fuel efficiency by up to 6.5 percent. by converting wasted heat energy to improve performance.
Customers who specify this engine will not only improve driveability but also have a positive impact on their bottom line thanks to the increased torque and improved fuel efficiency, says Gran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America, "the Volvo D13 with turbo compounding brings real-world benefits to owners and drivers."
According to Volvo, the turbo compounding increases fuel efficiency by converting wasteful mechanical energy from the exhaust into greater torque that is subsequently returned to the engine's crankshaft. This additional torque enables the Volvo D13 with turbo compounding to improve both performance and efficiency at the same time, according to the manufacturer.
"The D13 with turbo compounding is an ideal match for our popular XE - eXceptional Efficiency - downspeeding package," said John Moore, product marketing manager for powertrain at Volvo. "Downspeeding increases the energy in the exhaust, which in turn raises the efficiency of the turbo compounding unit and lowers engine friction at lower cruise rpms. This engine will provide additional torque."
With the option to boost fuel efficiency, the Volvo D13 with turbo compounding will be offered in two HP ratings—425 and 455—as well as three torque management packages—XE- Economy, XE- High-Torque, and XE- Adaptive Gearing. The D13 with turbo compounding improves fuel efficiency for steady state, long-haul applications where downspeeding drivelines thrive.
Shimless rockers reduce maintenance intervals for valve adjustments in addition to turbo compounding. A tried-and-true common rail fuel system lessens vibration and noise in the cab as well. Another feature of the engine is a unique wave piston design, which lowers soot emission and raises compression ratio to improve combustion efficiency.
